Facing a New Day

When facing a new day, I know I will be faced with a multitude of decisions. Deciding when to do, what to do, how to do, if I’ll do, why not do, why do, what if I do, now that I’ve done, etc., etc., etc! There will be mundane, daily decisions such as do I fill the tank with gas here or down the road. There will be massive, spiritual decisions such as do I give way to the flesh in this area. There will be important life decisions such as do I play with the kids or put it off another day. There will be choices between good and evil, choices between good and good, and choices between good, better, and best. Each new day brings with it 1,000s of decisions.

When facing a new day, I know I may likely face enormous challenges to my faith! This day may bring a new trial or it may just bring an additional heaviness to yesterday’s trial. This day may bring troubles too big to handle or tiny troubles all day long that I think I can handle! One thing is for sure, some, if not most, of our new days will come with troubles and worries. (Job 14:1, Matt 6:24)

When facing a new day, I know that because of grace, I just may face rapturous joys! Daily, common graces abound richly upon us in all realms of life, material, physical, and spiritual. Therefore, each day brings with it reason after reason to offer thanksgiving and gratitude to God.

Whether this particular day will be filled with trials or joys, I do not know.

However, there is something I am very sure of concerning this day and every day! I may face new grueling decisions. I may face new heavy burdens. I may face a new day of ease. One thing is for sure though, today I will face new mercies!

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lam 3:22-23

New mercies to guide me through a maze of decisions. New mercies to cast my new cares upon the Lord and trust in Him. New mercies to attribute every good gift to the goodness of God!

A new day might have sun or it might have rain. A new day might have laughter or it might have sorrow. But rest assured dear child of God, every time you face a brand new day, you face a host of brand new mercies! Mercies designed just for you, just for that day. Mercies crafted from and spilling from the hands of our Loving Father!

With all the unknowns and surprises that a new day brings, thanks be to God, it always brings new mercies as well.

Give glory to God for His faithfulness, His steadfast love, and His never-ending, new-every-day mercies!

Meditating on a Pink Sky

One of the reasons I enjoy praying outside is because observing God’s creation moves my mind and my affections toward God. Recently I was walking a trail and spending time in prayer when I could not help but notice a beautiful sky. There were only a few clouds in the sky and the morning hue was a deep, smooth blue. The clouds which were present were as slim stretches of waves capping across the blue ocean. The sun, coming up and casting its light on the underneath of the thin, stretching clouds, colored them a light pink. It was absolutely gorgeous!

I began to ponder on this captivating scenery, and thus slipped right into a meaningful time of prayer with the Lord.

I first thought, “If the Lord so easily, masterfully, and wonderfully paints a breathtaking sky in this world, imagine how spell-bounding the views in the new heavens and the new earth will be!” Just think about it for a few minutes. This present world is tainted, tarnished, and corrupted under a weight of sin. In fact, creation itself groans to be set free from the mucky fog of falleness that hampers its fullness (Rom 8:22). One day, that heavy mist will vanish and the new heavens and new earth will shine forth in all their glorious, God-given wonder! If you think you have seen beauty in creation, you haven’t seen anything yet! The new heavens and new earth will so far outshine this present world that there will hardly be any comparison (Rev 21:1).

A further thought struck me with even more force. I thought, “If the beauty of this fallen creation grabs our attention, imagine what it will be like when we behold the Creator in all His beauty!” It is true, isn’t it, that the heavens declare the glory of God? The beauty, the perfection, the order, the design, the detail, the intricacy of creation points back to the Creator. If His handiwork is breathtaking, He will leave us absolutely breathless! (Rev 22:4, Ps 19:1) The beauty we speak of now is only a glimpse, a shadow, a taste of the true beauty which is the presence of God!

Psalm 27:4 “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple. (Ps 50:2, 96:6)

His perfect, radiant beauty is enough to capture our wonder, awe, and praise forever!

A Fish Out of Water

A preacher without a pulpit is like a fish out of water!

When a fish finds himself on land, for whatever reason, whether washed upon shore or caught on the fisherman’s hook, he immediately begins to struggle. He flops. He flips. He gasps. He squirms. He locates the water and strives to return to it. If he fails to do so, he perishes!

Why doesn’t he just adapt? Why doesn’t he just grow some feet and learn to live on land? Why doesn’t he give up the fight to find water? Simply put - he was made for the water! Nothing else will satisfy or substitute! It’s water or nothing.

A man who has received the call of the Lord to pursue the office of pastor is much the same. He is at home only when he is behind the pulpit. That is, when he is in front of God’s people, feeding the flock of God.

When a pastor finds himself out of the pulpit, for whatever reason, whether voluntary or involuntary, he immediately begins to struggle and feel extremely out of place. He never settles or finds satisfaction in any other role. He gasps. He squirms. He longingly awaits the Lord to return him to his only fit. He feels as if he can’t preach God’s Word to God’s people, he will perish!

Why doesn’t he just move on? Why doesn’t he just find another vocation? Why does he risk the venture, the trouble, the possible again? Why does he pick up and move at a moment’s notice? Why doesn’t he just do something different and move back home? Simply put - he was made for the pulpit! It’s preaching or nothing!

Jeremiah 20:9 “If I say, ‘I will not mention Him, or speak any more in His name,’ there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.”

I am flopping today because I am out of water! However, I am also rejoicing!

I rejoice that I have the privilege to hear the Word preached today by a fine pastor! I rejoice that while the Lord has me “on hold” at the present, He hasn’t put me “on the shelf!” I rejoice knowing that there is an oasis in my future! The Lord will direct me to new water because I was made for it.

And I will swim with all my might! Or to say it better, I long for and look forward to the chance to breath again! To preach the unsearchable riches of Christ!

Shirts, Ties, and Books!

As you all know, a team of 19 from Search And See will soon depart for a mission trip in Kenya, Africa. One of our primary purposes for this trip is to be a blessing to the saints! We have several activities, events, and gifts already planned.

While we are there, we will be given the tremendous privilege to train 15 pastors in Gospel ministry! We are thrilled, excited, and humbled. If the truth be known, they will probably teach us! We do not want to just teach them though, we want to bless them!

It is our desire to bring 15 new, white dress shirts, 15 new neckties, and 75 books (5 per pastor). The books on our list are The ESV Study Bible, Desiring God, Let the Nations be Glad, 9 Marks of a Healthy Church, and The Pursuit of Holiness. As you can tell by the list, we are attempting to cover a wide-range of issues that every pastor will face.

We are asking for your help. It will cost a little over $1,000.00 to purchase the books, and we need 11 shirts and 11 neckties to complete the project. We need to have this finalized by SEPTEMBER 19!

If you could donate funds or send a shirt and tie, please send all donations to Search And See Ministries, PO Box 1304, Paintsville, KY 41240.

Help us be a blessing to 15 Kenyan pastors!

2 Excellent Sermons!

I strongly recommend the following two sermons to you.

  1. Dr. Sinclair Ferguson’s message on Luke 16:1-9, “The Strangest Parable Ever?” This text has always alluded me. I remember sitting in a homiletics class in seminary, and the professor assigned this passage to the class. We did our best with it, but it was clear that we really did not understand what Jesus is saying. Even more surprising, our professor, one of the finest homileticians around, wasn’t sure he understood it either. I have always left this parable scratching my head. Dr. Ferguson unpacks it clearly in this message. It seems so simple now!! You can find it here.
  2. Matt Chandler’s message, “Culture and Theology: Homosexuality.” My wife and a friend recommended this message to me. Including a Q and A, it lasts over 2 hours! It took me three workouts at the gym to finish listening to it on my wife iPod, but it was worth it. Chandler handles this tough, emotionally charged, often misunderstood subject with charity, biblical balance, and a firm stand for truth. It would be a great asset for any preacher because everyone of us should address this topic. It would be helpful for family and friends who desire to minister to loved ones trapped in a homosexual lifestyle. It would also be enlightening for one engaged in or tempted by homosexuality. Evangelicals have been poorly represented in this area. Chandler takes us a long way forward! You can find it here.

The Looks on Their Faces

Ezekiel, a prophet of God with an unwelcome message, was told twice by the Lord not to “be dismayed at their looks” (2:6, 3:9). Have you ever heard the saying, “If looks could kill?” That saying could very well have come into existence during Ezekiel’s ministry! Ezekiel, however, was doing the Lord’s bidding and speaking the Lord’s words, therefore, the Lord continued to encourage him not to be afraid of words or looks. Ezekiel was not to retreat from his calling. He was not to cower under the opposition of those who refused his message. He was not to succumb to their threatening, disapproving looks.

If you are a preacher who stands for Truth and boldly, yet lovingly, proclaims the Truth, you have seen some looks in your day! Have you ever thought after delivering a difficult and hard, but true message, “Boy, if looks could kill, I’d be a dead man today!” The fact is that something is wrong with your content if you do NOT receive the occasional raised eyebrow, red face, or roll of the eyes! Why? Because truth is not easy to swallow or believe. Truth is often against the grain of good ol’ boy logic. Truth often confronts.

As preachers, though, we must guard against assumptions. Don’t assume you rightly interpret all facial expressions. You must get to know something about the individual first. Then, usually, their looks betray them, whether for good or bad. Here are a few looks you may encounter while proclaiming God’s Word.

First, there is the look of utter disapproval, frustration, and even anger. It’s hard to miss this one or even falsely diagnose it. If someone is upset enough with your message, it is usually written all over his face. You won’t be the only one who notices it either! The squirming in the seat, the frequent cough or grunt, the huff, the occasional glance to the watch or popping of the keys gives this one away to everybody. By the look on their faces, you can tell these people are thinking loudly, “I disagree with you. I will not change my mind. Nothing you can say will ever change my mind!” If this continues, be prepared and in prayer. This won’t stop with looks. There will eventually be a confrontation where you will be challenged in your beliefs. Stay steady and true to the Word. Don’t be afraid or dismayed by the look of prideful anger.

Second, there is the look of sheer boredom. This is not a look of disagreement. This is a look of bluntly communicating, “I don’t care!” Now, occasionally a believer’s face depicts this look. Maybe he falsely thinks he knows all there is to know on the present subject. Maybe he is overcome with slumber. Mostly though, this look is present on an unbeliever’s face. Why should he care? He doesn’t believe to begin with. Don’t be dismayed and take it personal, or think that you can’t get through to him, or have a self-pity party because you must not be a good preacher. Preach the truth of God passionately in word and life, and leave the results to God! You can’t change anybody anyway!

Third, there is the look of interest. God is using something in the sermon to grab this listener and wake him and shake him and lift him. Believer or unbeliever alike, you can tell when something has just hit home or a light has just clicked on. It is a beautiful sight to behold! Rejoice - not in your ability or talent, but in the work of the Word!

Fourth, there is the look of hunger. Believers who are hungry for God can’t hide it and do not wish to hide it. It is written all over their faces. Even when the sermon is painful, even when they feel they are being force-fed, even when it is new or different from anything they have ever heard, if it comes from the biblical text, they chew it, yea, they devour it! Many church members wonder how they can encourage their pastor. They don’t even realize that the look of hunger of their faces gives him a tremendous boost and lifts up his spirits and encourages him to remain steadfast to the Word.

A few things to remember next time you are preaching and you are getting all these looks. Remember, it’s not you, it’s not about you, it’s not up to you, it’s not from you. It’s all about the message you proclaim. Rejection and reception will be pointed to you, but it is ultimately rejection or reception of the Word, not you. That being the case, reception should cause us to rejoice; rejection should cause us to weep. Don’t get mad and upset with those who get mad and upset with you! They are really upset with God and His Word. Weep and pray. Repentance is desperately needed, and they probably do not see the error of their attitude. If God doesn’t move in grace, they will only become hardened in heart and stronger in pride. Pray for them. You cannot convince them, but God can change them!

Also, remember it is only the Word that is alive and active and sharper than any two-edged sword. Of course, it’s going to get lively reactions! It’s sharp! But it not only cuts, it heals! Keep staying true and faithful to proclaiming the Word as best as you can understand it. Communicate firm, loving messages. Don’t veer away an inch from clearly affirming biblical truth.

Finally, remember the Word is their only hope of salvation, change, sanctification, growth, maturity, help, strength. It alone will breath life into dry bones. Preach it! Don’t be dismayed at their looks!
