Letter from Pastor Joseph

Below you will find a letter I recently received from Pastor Joseph. The Lord has sent him many students to train for gospel ministry throughout Myanmar. They are constantly moving from place to place because they do not own land for their seminary. Please pray for their courage and perseverance as they study, prepare for ministry, evangelize, and face many hardships along the way. This coming October we will join them in a special graduation service. If you are interested in this trip, please contact us soon.

*In the photos, Pastor Joseph is pictured with his family and the students and also teaching the students.

"Dear Dr. Wil and Summer,

Our Students are very eager ed to be given by you their degree and to listen your live message.

We closed our seminary Today and we will begin our seminary in next coming June. It is for us to open again our seminary like a camel can not go through the eye of a needle but God is making impossible to become possible For His glory. God is giving us many people to be His disciples for His sending laborers into His harvest.

I think that God has displayed us the apostles as men condemned to death, for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men.

Even to the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed and beaten and homeless.(Icor 4:9,11)

God provided a small home for our orphans only but our students and some believers are sometime rejected and sometime banished from home to home and from land to land and our missionaries are in Christ suffering daily. Now our Bible school is almost collapse.

Please pray for Bible school land and continuing it in June."

The Foundation of Search And See Ministries

How did we arrive at the name “Search And See Ministries?” There is a story, a reason, and a Bible passage behind it.

In 1997, I begin to feel the Lord directing me to begin a ministry. One of the first questions of course was what would it be called. I believe the Lord gave me the name of this ministry during a prayer time. As I was praying, I began meditating on Psalm 139. The last two verses read, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And See if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

The Lord began to speak to me about ministry from those verses. Ministry begins with the minister. Well-known, well-organized, far-reaching ministries have fallen and crumbled by the dozens because the minister within the ministry fell!

I knew without a doubt my personal walk with the Lord was far more important than how large or how far the ministry would expand. The Lord would supply resources and open doors according to His will. I should always strive to be a faithful steward, a faith-filled risk-taker, and stretch every dollar as far as possible. In the end, however, the ministry will only have the funds and the opportunities that the Lord sees fit to give.

By far, the harder task is keeping an eye on my heart! Breadth of ministry is not as good a measure as is depth! Indeed, breadth is worthless without depth. Long lasting ministry with eternal results comes not from being the biggest, brightest, coolest and most popular around. Deep results are produced from a deep walk with the Lord.

It occurred to me so clear and with brute force, the Lord was not calling me to head up a “ministry,” the Lord was calling me to Himself! It wasn’t so much about what the ministry would do or ever become as it was about who I would be and become in Him! It doesn’t matter so much how many people “see” me or how they “see” me as it does that the Lord “sees” me and how the Lord “sees” me!

And that is when it hit me. We will call it “Search And See Ministries” so that even the name will be a constant reminder that we do not exist to make a name for ourselves; we exist to make much of Him! And that begins not on a platform in front of others but in the private prayer closet in front of Him!

And so we pray, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And See if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”

Pursuing the Mission

Having a mission statement is a great way to focus your ministry and efforts, but forming one and pursuing it are different matters. By God’s grace, He has given us special opportunities, special friends and supporters, and various means to pursue our mission. Below is an outline of how we are currently seeking to spread the message of Christ and some dreams we have for the future.

Sermons. The preaching of the Word is our primary means of equipping the saints and introducing unbelievers to Christ. We consider it our primary tool because we believe that the preaching of the Word is God’s primary method of advancing His Gospel. Therefore, we are constantly seeking for ways to spread the teaching of the Word to the ends of the earth. Currently, we are posting sermons on www.sermonaudio.com/searchandsee. This allows sermons to be accessed from any point on the globe that has internet capabilities. We have a podcast through Itunes, and we are also broadcasting 2 sermons each week in Liberia.

Media. In the age of information, there are more opportunities than ever to promote biblical truth and Gospel opportunities. Currently, we are on Twitter (@searchandsee), Facebook (Search And See Ministries), and maintaining 2 blogs (www.searchandsee.blogspot.com and www.sermonaudio.com/searchandsee)

Resources. We believe in supplying God-centered, Christ-exalting resources for the encouraging of the saints and witness to the lost. These include books, poems, papers, and blogs. All of these can be accessed or purchased on our Sermon Audio site.

Partnerships with Indigenous Christian Ministries. One of the most exciting opportunities for us is our partnerships with churches, pastors, and ministries in other nations. We currently have partnerships in India (Hopegivers Intl), Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda (Search and See, Africa), Myanmar (Emmanuel Ministries), and the Philippines (Pastor Decena). We arrange short-term mission trips to these ministries and take on projects to enable and equip them for ministry. We build churches, donate resources and books, sponsor orphans and pastors, purchase cows, etc. We are always asking God for help in order to help them!

Missions. As mentioned previously, mission trips is a major focus of Search And See. Our purpose for short-term missions is not to “see” the world, take exotic vacations, or provide an appearance of godliness in having “suffered” on the field for two weeks! Our purpose for short-term missions is that long-term results would be produced. We go to exhort the saints, share the Gospel with the lost, provide resources to the Church, alleviate any suffering we can, determine long-term investment strategies and projects, and expose as many people we can to as many foreign ministries as we can in order to raise awareness, support, and prayer. Our next missions endeavor is Myanmar and India this October!

Dreams for Future Ministry!

  1. For a setup fee of $199 and a monthly fee of $10, Sermon Audio will design an app for the Iphone, Ipod, and Ipad. This would give our sermons more exposure and accessibility. We are praying God would grant a sponsor for this project.
  2. Hopefully, in the near future we will launch a website. It is simply a matter of finding the time to design one with a nice presentation that is user friendly with easy access to all of our ministry opportunities and resources.
  3. We are praying to send full-time missionaries to our mission partner sites. There is great need for all kinds of full-time ministry like caring, teaching, and administration, but the main need is the training of pastors and church leaders.

Search And See Ministries is a very small ministry with a big vision! We have three men on our Board (Adam York, Tommy Kiker, and Peter Copeland), an Administrator (Barry Rowland), and the Founder (Wil Owens) who are all volunteers. Alongside these officers, God has given us a family of faithful friends, prayer warriors, and financial sponsors. We are thankful and amazed at the many God-sized opportunities the Lord has given us. It is our desire to walk through every door He opens.

To God be the glory! Great things He has done!

The Mission of Search And See Ministries

The Mission of Search And See Ministries

Search and See Ministries exists

to take the message of Christ

to All people, in All places, by All means, at All costs

so that the Gospel may be heard

and God may be glorified!

A mission statement is simply a tool to provide direction as to the purpose of a ministry and to provide a means of evaluation to enable the ministry to maintain its priorities and focus. The mission statement of Search And See Ministries is grounded in scriptural convictions and motivates us to continue striving towards its accomplishment with whatever means and resources the Lord provides. It is essentially a four-part platform for our ministry.

  1. The Purpose: “to take the message of Christ” It is our fundamental belief that the greatest and most needed message on earth is the Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ. We further believe that salvation is found in no other name or means. Jesus Christ is our only hope, and therefore, He is our only message! Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes...
  2. The Method: “to All people, in All places, by All means, at All costs”
  1. “to All people” - God means to bring to Himself a people from every tribe, tongue, and nation. It is God’s desire, therefore, it is ours as well. Revelation 5:9 “...for You were slain, and by Your blood You ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation
  2. “in All places - Missions and evangelism is about spreading the Gospel across all human barriers; racial, ethnic, social, and linguistic. Unity in Christ amidst diversity of color, background, tongue, and culture displays the power and glory of Christ. Ephesians 2:14,16 “For He Himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in His flesh the dividing wall of hostility...and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.
  3. “by All means” - We are committed to utilizing every means, resource, and avenue of proclaiming the Gospel to the nations that is available to us. Titus 2:14 “who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works.
  4. “at All costs” - Joyful labor, exciting endeavors, remarkable accomplishments in advancing the Gospel come through self-denial, living sacrifice, and many costs. If we are to see the Gospel envelope the globe, it will come at great, yet worthy, costs. Philippians 1:27 “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel”
3. The Necessity: “so that the Gospel may be heard” No one is born again apart from hearing the Gospel. Therefore, it is the glorious, joyful, delightful duty of God’s people to share this message with the world. As the Gospel advances, people are won to Christ and the Church grows and prospers. Romans 10:14 “...how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard?

4. The Motivation: “and that God may be glorified” We believe that the primary motivation, reason, and result of everything we do should be the glory of God! We further believe that God is greatly glorified in the spreading of His Gospel, the exaltation of His Son, and the growth of His Church. We also believe our lives are never more focused on God’s glory than when they are spent to proclaim and advance the Gospel! Philippians 2:13 “for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure

This is our mission. It is our platform. It is our guide. Our desire is that everything we pursue and every dollar we spend might come under the umbrella of this mission. This is how we started, how we have operated for 14 years, and by God’s grace, how we will finish!

What To Do In The Hot Seat

Today’s blog is further thoughts on my previous post. Yesterday I wrote about an occasion when President George H.W. Bush put Rev. Billy Graham in the hot seat by asking a provoking question in an emotional environment. The truth is, if you are a growing believer, you will from time to time find yourself in the hot seat, especially if you are a pastor!

We, as believers, then need to be prepared for when these occasions arise. In that light, I offer some thoughts on discerning the nature of why you find yourself in the hot seat and hopefully some helpful guidance as to how to respond in a Christlike manner.

First, discerning why you are in the hot seat. Actually, this is not so difficult to do. There will be clear and visible indications to help you understand “why” this particular question has been launched at you at this particular time. It comes down to two factors; context and attitude.

It should be stated clearly upfront that being placed in the hot seat does not always stem from antagonism. Sometimes people are genuinely struggling to understand Scripture or life and are sincerely asking for help when asking explosive questions. This is why it is so crucial to discern the “why” behind the question.

Context. Usually, genuine seekers of truth will approach you alone because their concern is a private matter or struggle. Whereas, occasionally when people group together and ask question after question in rapid succession, they are not after truth. They are looking for debate, argument, or to disprove you. For example, Nicodemus came to Jesus by night, alone, because he was sincerely seeking to know more about Jesus and his message. The Pharisees, however, would come to Jesus in groups seeking to discredit Him and His message.

It is true, this is not always the case. Sometimes people will approach you on their own in order to disprove or blame you. In addition, sometimes you will be in a group when a hot-button question is proposed to you, but from a sincere desire for truth. This is why we need to discern not only from context but from attitude as well.

Attitude. Along with context, we can discern the motivation for emotionally-charged questions by taking note of the attitude in which the question is asked. When someone asks a question from a stance of pride, it is clearly noticeable. The look on their face and the tone of their voice says, “I know more than you do. Now answer this loaded question and you will see that I am right!”

Anger is another giveaway. If someone has reached the boiling point, they do not wish to sit and dialogue with you. When they raise a question while raising their voice, they seek not truth. They seek agreement. They seek to win an argument. They seek your surrender.

However, pride and anger are not the only motivations for controversial questioning. Sincerity is often the chief motivating factor. When this is the case, you can see it in their eyes; you can hear it in their voice. They have not come to you to tear you down. They have come to plead for help. They have come for guidance. They have come desperately desiring to know the truth.

Two living examples quickly come to mind. I have often set with people in counseling situations where they have asked me hard questions. I knew the answer that I should give was NOT the answer they would like to hear. I also knew, though, they sincerely wanted the truth more than to be appeased. The seat was still hot. But the air was certainly diffused when I knew by the look on their face that they wanted God’s Word on the matter, even if it was difficult to accept.

On the other hand, I have attended a few meetings in which this was not the case. The unspoken agenda was far different than seeking to know or understand a position but was rather to dismantle it.

Therefore, discerning the nature of why you are in the hot seat is only half of the issue. We must then know how we should respond in Christlike fashion.

Second, we must respond in a way that glorifies God when we find ourselves in the hot seat. There is no greater example than Christ Himself. So let’s turn to Him for guidance first for the sincere questioner and then for the antagonist.

The Sincere Seeker. Think back to Nicodemus. How did Jesus respond? He certainly didn’t water down the truth in order not to offend Nicodemus. He certainly didn’t beat Nicodemus up with the truth either. He firmly, lovingly, and truthfully told one of the most religious men of his day, “You must be born again!”

We will certainly experience moments like this when the person asking the question makes answering the question very difficult. For example, when a couple asks about remarriage and you happen to hold the minority view. Or an individual enslaved to sin justifies his sin in the form of a question. What do you do when you know the answer that you must give according to your conscience and your understanding of Scripture just may greatly offend this person? What if this person is the church’s largest contributor? What if this person is a personal friend of the family? What do you do?

First, you point the person to the Scripture to diffuse the personal nature of the conversation. In other words, explain how God’s Word must be our guide in these matters and that this is not personal. Show them passages of Scripture that speak to the issue raised. Let the Bible answer the question before you address it! Second, lovingly affirm the Bible. Third, encourage the person to believe and apply God’s Word. Fourth, pledge your support to help them walk out this area of life. Fifth, pray with them specifically on the issue from the standpoint of Scripture and the promises of God!

Let the Bible take over the conversation. You will find the seat becoming less heated and the atmosphere more inviting as the Spirit begins a work in the heart from the Word.

The Antagonist Person or Group. Again, if we look to Jesus we discover three ways in which He responded. Clearly, different situations called for varying responses from the Lord. We too will discover that our circumstance will determine our response to intentionally provoking questions.

First, at times Jesus would openly, boldly rebuke His accusers like when He called them “white-washed tombs” and “a brood of vipers.” He surely was holding nothing back on those occasions. Notice carefully however, He was not so much answering their questions as He was revealing the nature of their hearts behind the questions. Again, He knew they were not after truth, and His response was meant to prove to them that He knew their hearts!

We must take great caution in responding in this fashion, namely because we are prone to respond in the flesh. The purpose of this response is to expose a sinful heart. If you can do that in a gentle manner, in the Spirit, without raising your voice, and the occasion requires it, then do so. Make sure though, you always speak the truth in love.

Second, at times Jesus would respond to antagonistic questions with His own question. For example, the chief priests and elders asked Jesus by what authority was He doing these things. Jesus responded, “I will also ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Jesus turned the tables on his opponents by asking them a question in response to their question. If you recall the story, they wouldn’t answer and so neither did the Lord. This is the wisest response for us but if you are like me, it is also the most difficult one. I am not quick on my feet. I am the kind of person that needs time to ruminate and meditate. The number of times I have thought, “I wish I would have said” are innumerable! However, if you are quick-witted, as was Charles Spurgeon, you can approach hot-button issues from insincere motivations this way. It not only exposes the heart but deflates the head as well!

Third, on some occasions, Jesus simply remained silent in the face of His accusers. This was of course during the illegal trials before His crucifixion when He was being falsely charged. He was fulfilling Scripture for sure, but there is a lesson for us here as well. Jesus knew it was His time to depart. He also knew their minds were made up and nothing He said or did was going to change them. In fact, the few times He did speak, they only grew the more fierce.

Learn this lesson well. If you try to explain or defend your position or thoughts, only to be interrupted, shouted down, or dismissed, the time for discussion is clearly over. It is not going to take place in that environment. Sometimes, it’s just better to remain silent, let them have their say, and walk away. It is a much better witness for the Lord to leave in a gentle manner than to respond with heated argument.

Remember, the goal in our conversation is to glorify the Lord. You can do that with words and with demeanor. Remember also, it is not about you. It is about Truth. It is about God’s Word. It is about Christ and the Gospel. Don’t take it personally. Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them” for the very ones who cried for His crucifixion. By His grace, we can do the same.

Discern the motivation. Respond in a Christlike manner. That’s what we must do when the seat grows extremely hot!!!!!!!!!!

Disappointed and Then Pleased with Billy Graham

I recently read President George W. Bush’s Decision Points. It was an enjoyable and insightful read for me. I must say though, the one story that was extremely disturbing was when Bush recalled an evening his extended family spent with Rev. Billy Graham.

This was during the presidency of Bush’s father, George H.W. Bush. The entire family was in Maine. Billy Graham had been invited to spend some time with them. One evening, everyone retired to a large room in the house and any who wished, could ask Rev. Graham a question. President H.W. was first. With H.W.’s mother sitting right there in the room, he put forward the following question. “Billy, some people say you have to have a born-again experience to go to heaven. Mother here is the most religious, kind person I know, yet she has had no born-again experience. Will she go to heaven?” (p. 31)

Wow! Talk about being put in the hot seat! Before I continue, let me just say, President H.W. Bush was wrong in putting forth that kind of question in that kind of setting with his mother right there in the room. Manipulation of the highest order. If he genuinely was concerned for his mother’s salvation and genuinely believed Rev. Graham to know the answer, he would have spoken with him privately about such things. He made it personal, and therefore shifted the answer in his favor from the beginning, and being a politician, he knew what he was doing. (BTW-I do happen to like President H.W. Bush!)

Having said that, Rev. Graham replied in a most disturbing, disappointing, and unbiblical manner. Quoting George W. “We all looked at Billy. In his quiet, strong voice, he replied, ‘George, some of us require a born-again experience to understand God, and some of us are born Christians. It sounds as if your mom was just born a Christian’” (p. 31).

When I read those words, my mouth hit the floor and so did my heart! That statement is one of the most anti-Gospel statements that could be uttered, and even more shocking was the source from which it came.

To be fair though, immediately after this episode, George W. tells that he spent some time alone with Rev. Graham later. During their talk, Rev. Graham did what he is known for, he shared a clear Gospel presentation, and George W. never forgot it. However, he has never forgotten Graham’s comment about his grandmother either!

So even though I enjoyed the President’s explanation of key moments during his presidency, I walked away from this book extremely disappointed with what I had read. Which is why I was so encouraged to read just weeks later of another comment Rev. Graham has made recently.

When asked what are some things he would do differently looking back over his ministry, Graham said that he wished he would have spent more time with family, study more, and preach less. Also, he said the following, “I also would have steered clear of politics. I'm grateful for the opportunities God gave me to minister to people in high places; people in power have spiritual and personal needs like everyone else, and often they have no one to talk to. But looking back I know I sometimes crossed the line, and I wouldn't do that now.” (For entire quote, click here.)

I don’t know what lines Rev. Graham had in mind when he made that statement, but I’m sure that conversation in Maine was one of those times he knows he “crossed the line.”

I really appreciate Rev. Billy Graham. He remains a hero for faithfully preaching the Gospel to thousands. He is just a man and has made terrible mistakes, as we all have. Yet, he demonstrated for us all great humility and maturity in reflecting on his ministry. He is even more a hero now than ever, as far as I am concerned!

Book Review: For the Fame of God's Name

For the Fame of God’s Name: Essays in Honor of John Piper. Eds. Sam Storms and Justin Taylor. Wheaton: Crossway, 2010.

There are two groups of people who would enjoy this book, (1) those who have been influenced by John Piper’s ministry and/or have a great appreciation for Piper (2) and/or those who enjoy reading and interacting with theology, such as reading a theological journal. I happen to fit in both categories, and therefore, this book was a source of encouragement, enjoyment, and equipping for me.

After the Lord Jesus Christ, I have a short list of heroes. On that list, John Piper stands at the top. His preaching, theology, passion for Christ, and personal example of faith have been used by the Lord to greatly influence me in the faith and encourage me in my own walk with the Lord. Piper is baptistic, passionate, missional, and reformed, with all of those characteristics falling under the banner, The Glory of God. I praise God for His gift to the church in the teaching/preaching and theology of John Piper. I also praise the Lord for using his servant to open my eyes to a brand new universe, namely, the true universe that has God at the center!

Each chapter in this volume is an essay contributed by a friend or associate of Piper. The first few chapters are biographical, the bulk of the chapters are interactions with Piper’s theology, methodology, and preaching, and the final two chapters are descriptions of Desiring God Ministries and The Bethlehem Institute, which is now Bethlehem College and Seminary.

Why publish a book such as this while the author is still living? Storms and Taylor answer that question in an introductory letter to Piper. They explain that if they were to have waited, some of the contributors may have already entered glory and been unable to express their appreciation to Piper in this format. Also, the Apostle Paul call us to honor such men as Epaphroditus. Their prayer is that in honoring Piper’s ministry, they will ultimately draw greater attention to the supremacy of Christ. After all, that has been a central defining theme of Piper’s ministry.

If you know little of John Piper, this would be a great introduction. If you know and appreciate him, this will be a great encouragement. If you care nothing for him, the sheer volume of Scripture (14 pages, single space, three columns) utilized to explain Piper’s positions just may lead you to new conclusions! Click here.

I See a Man: Meditating on Sovereign Providence

I See a Man: Meditating on Sovereign Providence

I see a man and the man I see

appears to the untrained eye to stand alone.

Only to the untrained eye though,

for above him is a cloud of witnesses,

around him is a circle of friends,

near him is family,

and in him is One closer than a brother.

Still, he, at times, appears to stand alone.

Alone when standing for truths beyond him.

Alone when bracing against the fierce, bitter winds of accusation.

Alone when enduring the piercing eyes of outsider speculation.

I see a man and the man I see

stands before The Slough of Despondency.

It woos him and beckons him to its darkened abyss.

He hasn’t always stood on its edges,

seeming to step or slip into its depth any moment.

But age and failure do often whisper in his ears

and so the bottomless well of sadness and gloom

continue to welcome him in.

What keeps him there I ask, why all the world would agree to his entrance?

Yet he stands, as if alone, and yields not to its insistence.

I see a man and the man I see

is shielded by a Hand that remains unseen.

It folds around him in a loving embrace.

It stands between him and the lonely, empty place.

But more than for his protection does the Hand hold firm

for It does more than comfort when living in the storm.

This Hand of Providence warms life and joy into his soul.

Yes, the Hand is unnoticed by the unopened eye,

but the joy within him, one cannot deny.

Hand unseen. Joy unexplainable.

For what would cause a man to dance inside

when all around him seems unraveled and untied?

The answer may be his loss of sanity.

Or it just may be He sees the Hand that others cannot see.

I see a man and the man I see

. . . is me.

Psalm 33:20 “Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.”
